I often get questions about connection problems when using MCRemote. The rule of thumb is that MCRemote can not read what it can not receive.
Most of the problems are related to the local network. Check the following:
Switch off authentication in MC
A known problem is when Authentication for the Library in MC is switched on. If you do not really need it switch it off for now (I’m working on a solution for the problem).
Did you enable the webservice in MC?
Before MC Remote can connect to MC the web service must be started. In MC do the following:
Go to the ‘Media Network’ plugin click the options button. Check that the ‘Use Media Network to share this library and enable DLNA’ is enabled. After confirmation of the settings you should see some activity going on in the ‘Activity log’. As soon as MC Remote is started there should be a lot of activity going on here. To filter out all other connections you can select the server in the ‘Server summary drop down box’.
Can I connect to the server MC is running on?
Try and enter the following url in the browser of your phone:
http://<IpAddressOfTheServer>:52199/MCWS/V1/
What you see here is a description of the web service MCRemote is relying on. Tapping the different links in the page should give you control over MC (Pause, Play, Next, Previous, etc).
If you can not connect to the service and you don’t see the page above then there is something blocking the connection to the server. There are many reasons why the connection fails and possibly more than one at the same time, so if one suggestions does not help move on to the next leaving the previous suggestion active too:
- The firewall on the server is blocking port 52199. Try and disable the firewall temporarily to eliminate this cause during testing. Afterwards you can add a rule to the firewall allowing the connection.
- Virus scanner or Adware on the server is blocking the connection. Try and disable the anti virus and adware software temporarily to eliminate this cause. Look in the description of the software how to allow connection for the port (default 52199).
- Many routers have restrictions on wireless connections as a means for protecting your local network. These restrictions could block the remote. Possible restrictions are:
- Network access list which only allows certain MAC Addresses to connect. In that case disable the list temporarily to eliminate the cause during testing. If this is the cause, add the MAC Address of the phone to the list.
- Blocking of ports other than the standard ones. For instance, most routers allow port 80 which is the standard for Http traffic. All non standard ports are refused. You can use port forwarding or enabling of the default port 52199 of the MC service. In case you choose for port forwarding you should give your phone a fixed IP Address. When you rely on DHCP it is possible the router returns a different IP Address each time the phone connects to the wireless network.
- Network congestion could be a cause. When you have a lot going on at your local network (many DLNA devices, Bit Torrent downloaders, Skype, VoIP, etc.) it can be that the network is congested meaning that there is not enough bandwidth left for other tasks.
- Try and disable as many network activity as possible during testing. Stop bit torrent software completely. Disable bit torrents in NAS equipment during testing. Bit torrents also take a lot of upload bandwidth even when no download is in progress.
- Many routers have a so called QoS (Quality of Service) setting page where you can give certain activities more/less bandwidth to prevent other tasks from getting to little. MC’s traffic will probably be in the ‘Other connections’ since port 52199 is not a standard port.
How do I find the IP Address of the server?
Start a ‘Command box’.
Type (Windows button)+’R’. The ‘Run’ dialog should appear. Type ‘cmd’ and click the Ok button.
type ‘ipconfig /all’ (without the single quotes) and press the ‘Enter’ key on your keyboard.
The IP Address will be listed for your network connection.
Alternatively in Windows 7 you can also get the IP Address using the Control Panel like below (your network connection will probably have another name then ‘Local Area Connection 2’.
iPad 1 is no longer hot
The iPad 1 was a revolution and its successors will build on that success. With iPad 2 came iOS 5 and the world had become better a better place. Well… for iPad 2 users at least. My iPad 1 has become slow, unstable and no longer fun to work with. Of late it are not only the Apps that keep crashing but also the iPad itself has reset itself on occasion. And restarting takes ages.
The more power the tablets get the more power is used by the software. That Apple looks ahead and not back is understandable but not very customer friendly. My iPad is no more than 1.5 years old and it is not hot anymore and I notice that Apple thinks that way too. Today the iPad 3 is hot and all software is dedicated to that platform. Apple is forgetting how it got here, namely via its iPad buyers.
The new iPhoto does not run on iPad 1 which is sad. It is a nice App and even iPads without a camera could benefit from it. I guess the power needed to run the App is not sufficient in iPad 1. I can live with that. I still use my Photoshop CS3 on PC and that is more than sufficient.
Am I going to buy the new iPad 3? Knowing that Apple will keep on the innovative road ahead will make the iPad 3 obsolete in 1.5 years. No, I guess I will be waiting for Windows 8 to come out this autumn and maybe I’ll give it a try to downgrade my iPad back to iOS 4 so I can have fun again.
DWDD Matthijs van Nieuwkerk en Martijn van Dam
Ik ben een groot fan van de DWDD en over het algemeen kan ik Matthijs van Nieuwkerk goed pruimen. Vannavond echter zat ik met mijn tenen helemaal krom tot achter mijn enkels. Ik snap dat Matthijs een andere favoriet heeft dan Martijn van Dam en dat hij hem nog te groen vindt voor de strijd met Wilders e.d. is duidelijk, maar zo weinig ruimte geven als in het interview van vannavond is ongehoord. Als je wilt weten wat iemand te vertellen heeft moet je hem wel de kans geven een antwoord te geven. Het leek haast wel een te persoonlijk kruisvaart. De tafeldame strooide nog wat zout in de nog verse wonden. Hoe dan ook leek Matthijs vanavond nog hieperder dan anders. Zelden heb ik zoveel vragen afgevuurd gezien in zo’n korte tijd. Nee dit is geen schoonheid van een interview maar een regelrechte frontale aanval op Martijn geweest. Matthijs wees een kerel en bied je excuses aan!
Domotica
In oktober van dit jaar (2011) hebben we een huis gekocht in Apeldoorn. Het idee dat ik in mijn hoofd heb is er een zeer energie efficiënt huis van te maken en dan komt al snel domotica om de hoek kijken. Mijn zoektocht leidde langs veel systemen. Ooit heb ik eens iets met X10 gedaan dus daar maar weer eens naar gekeken. De domoticawereld gaat snel. Nieuwe protocollen als KNX, ZigBee en Z-Wave kwamen voorbij. Toen viel mijn oog op Loxone, een KNX systeem (dus bedraad) maar met een uitbreidingsmodule die EnOcean heet. Ik heb me een beetje ingelezen in EnOcean en ben overtuigd geraakt van deze oplossing. EnOcean is een draadloze en batterijloze standaard voor domotica. Grote energie neutrale gebouwen zijn er al mee voorzien. In combinatie met KNX is dit een heel krachtige oplossing.
Voor de installatie heeft het gebruik van EnOcean grote gevolgen. Ik heb ooit op de technische school installatietechniek gehad en de verschillende schakelmethoden (o.m. de beroemde hotelschakeling) in praktijk moeten brengen. Met de draadloze technieken verandert dit totaal. Met EnOcean schakel- en regeltechniek hoeven er geen draden meer naar de schakelaars te lopen. Een schakelaar voor een lamp kan zelfs met een plakstrip aan de muur worden bevestigd op elke gewenste plek aan de wand (ik ga wel schroeven gebruiken hoor). Geen centraal- en inbouwdozen zijn meer nodig en dus ook geen leidingen er naar toe. Je moet volledig anders leren denken. Het advies om veel loze leidingen bij de bouw aan te laten leggen moet opnieuw worden bekeken. Ze zijn nog wel nodig maar anders dan voorheen.
Met Loxone moeten voor de onderdelen die bedraad zijn nog wel loze leidingen worden gelegd maar voor EnOcean schakel materiaal is dat niet meer nodig.
Het mooiste van EnOcean schakelmateriaal vind ik dat het batterijloos is. De modules maken gebruik van een techniek die energieharvesting (oogsten van energie) wordt genoemd. De energie-efficiënte zendertjes en ontvangertjes halen de benodigde energie uit hun omgeving. Tot nu toe zijn er 3 vormen van oogsten bedacht.
1. Energie die vrijkomt door het indrukken van een schakelaar.
2. Energie uit omgevingslicht.
3. En nieuw is energie uit temperatuurverschillen.
Op het moment van dit schrijven is het nog niet mogelijk thermostaatkranen te kopen die batterijloos zijn maar ik verwacht dat dit een kwestie van tijd is.
Een nadeel van de EnOcean materialen is dat het relatief kostbaar is in vergelijking met de andere technieken. Als je echter rekening houdt met het ontbreken van leidingen en draden ontstaat een beetje gunstiger beeld (het leggen van een loze leiding kost ons bijvoorbeeld 45 Euro meerwerk).
Naar stopcontacten en lampen moeten natuurlijk nog wel draden worden gelegd. In ons geval is het wel lastig om dat bij de bouw al voor elkaar te krijgen omdat het om een min of meer standaard huis gaat. Alleen met meer- minderwerk zijn veranderingen nog mogelijk en dat vergt veel nadenkwerk van mijn kant. De architect en aannemer hebben een traditionele manier van bouwen en dat houdt in dat er geen rekening wordt gehouden met automatisering van het huis.
Lang heb ik gedacht het systeem met Z-Wave op te bouwen maar diverse entries in blogs en forums gaven bij mij het beeld van een mislukte standaard met veel verschillende smaken en dus problemen. Iets waar ik in het geheel geen zin in heb.
Een voordeel van Loxone is de ondersteuning van bijvoorbeeld Sonos en diverse andere streaming apparatuur. Dat scheelt weer een hoofdbreken en afstandsbediening.
06-05-2012 Loxone aangeschaft.
Tja, de oplevering van ons huis nadert en dus moeten er knopen worden doorgehakt. Ik heb vrijdag het Loxone systeem aangeschaft. Het zal dus over een aantal dagen hier zijn (uit Oostenrijk).
Wat ik besteld heb is het volgende:
- Miniserver
- Extensie module
- Dimmer extensie module
- Enocean extensie module
- 8 Radiatorkranen met instelling van 0 – 10 volt
- M30 adapterringen om de radiatorkranen op de vloerverwarming en radiatoren te kunnen bevestigen (dit is nog wel spannend of het gaat passen).
- 3.8 A 24V Voeding
Totaal voor ruim 2300 Euro. Dat is best veel geld en ik ben nog niet klaar.
Mijn zoektocht naar schakelmateriaal heeft ook het e.e.a. opgeleverd. In Enschede is het bedrijf Klusspullen.nl gevestigd. Daar zijn een aantal enthousiaste mensen voor me aan het speuren gegaan. Het blijkt dat naast Jung er nog meer leveranciers zijn van EnOcean compatibel schakelmateriaal. Hier volgt een lijstje.
Ik heb de vertegenwoordiger van Eltako in Nederland een mail gestuurd en hij reageerde met de vraag of we het kunnen gaan testen. Ik ben benieuwd wat zijn bedoeling is. Wat in ieder geval nodig is staat hieronder (geldt natuurlijk alleen voor ons huis):

De prijzen zijn adviesprijzen van Eltako. Duidelijk is dat het geheel nogal wat kost. Vooral de thermostaten, bewegingsmelders (nog niet in de lijst) en raam-/deursensoren maken de installatie duur. Zonder deze componenten zou het geheel voordeliger worden maar gaat ook het besparende effect verloren. In dat geval is het alleen luxe en verdien je de installatie niet terug. Naar schatting, uitgaande van 20% besparing op elektriciteit en gas, is de terugverdientijd ongeveer 12 a 13 jaren. Maar wij kijken niet alleen economisch naar de aanschaf. Wij vinden het belangrijk ons steentje bij te dragen aan ons aller toekomst en dan zijn economische argumenten ondergeschikt.
Ik heb ondanks al het denkwerk uiteindelijk toch nog een fout gemaakt. Ik had aanvankelijk loze leidingen naar alle kamers laten leggen die vlak onder de plafonds bedrade bewegingsmelders mogelijk moesten maken. Op het laatste moment heb ik die weggestreept. Daar heb ik nu spijt van. Ik hoop maar dat de mensen die de elektra aanleggen daar nog wat aan kunnen doen. Doordat de badkamer nu nog casco is het mogelijk daar nog loze leidingen aan te laten leggen naar (bijna) alle kamers. Eens kijken of dat een optie is.

Het loxone systeem is een week geleden aangekomen.
De opleverdatum van het huis staat op 6 juni geplant. Daarna gaan we dus aan de slag. Pikant detail: op de binnenkant van de deksel zit een weerstand geplakt. Deze is nodig voor het afsluiten van de keten (net zoals bij SCSI nodig was).
18-05-2012 Test opstelling
Vandaag heb ik een test uitgevoerd met het Loxone systeem. Ik ben naar een electrotechnische groothandel in Arnhem geweest en heb daar een Eltako serie-schakelaar gekocht om te kunnen testen. Alles lijkt goed te werken. Een probleem dat ik waarnam is dat de schakelaar niet goed functioneert. Dat ligt volgens mij niet aan het EnOcean protocol maar aan de Eltako schakelaar.
Hier zie je de schakelaar van Eltako (althans het binnenste gedeelte, het raampje zit er niet om). Wanneer ik op de linker schakelaar in de linker bovenhoek ( ‘1’ ) druk word keurig ‘Links Boven’ als ingedrukt getoond. Druk ik op de rechter schakelaar in de linker bovenhoek ( ‘2’ ) dan worden de linker en rechter schakelaar ‘boven’ als ingedrukt getoond. Aan de onderzijde is het precies zo. Wanneer je nabij het midden drukt ziet EnOcean vaak dat beide schakelaar zijn ingedrukt. Het lijkt er op dat er 1 drukvlak is gemaakt voor beide schakelaar en dat op de een of andere manier wordt gedetecteerd dat er links of rechts op het drukvlak gedrukt wordt en dat werkt niet altijd even goed. Ik ga binnenkort eens Gira en Jung uitproberen.
In de ‘Live View’ van Loxone Config’ zie je dan het bovenstaande getoond. Dit verklaard misschien ook waarom Eltako een frontje voor de knop meelevert waarmee je er 1 knop van kunt maken.
De software van Loxone is zeer uitgebreid. Je kunt in principe alles aan alles knopen. Niet dat je dat uiteindelijk wilt maar in een testsituatie kun je lekker spelen 
Ik ben nu op het punt gekomen dat ik begin te begrijpen wat er allemaal mogelijk is en dat is met Loxone wel heel veel.
20-5-2012 Eltako
Ik heb vandaag ontdekt dat de schakelaar op de een of ander manier, vermoedelijk door capacitief meten, merkt dat ik een vinger op het linker of rechter deel van de schakelaar heb liggen. Ik ontdekte het bij toeval. Ik hield de schakelaar in de linker hand en legde een vinger op het linker en rechter deel tijdens het drukken van het linker deel. Beide werden getoond. Toen ik de vinger van het rechter gedeelte weghaalde werkte de schakelaar alleen op het linker deel. Dit is vervelend gedrag dus ik denk dat ik de dubbele schakelaars niet ga gebruiken. Je maakt er trouwens in een handomdraai een enkele schakelaar van.
Apetrots
Gisteren stuurde mijn zoon Arne mij een mail met als titel ‘Cracked it’. Hij studeert hernieuwbare energie aan de Universiteit van Delft en is aan het afstuderen. Nou moet je weten dat hij al maanden bezig is in de taal Modellica om een zonneboiler systeem te modelleren. Hij heeft me in de loop van de tijd het e.e.a. verteld en ik begrijp waar hij mee bezig is. Wat hij gemaakt heeft is geen kleinigheid.
Gisteren was het dus gelukt. Het hele model werkt nu samen. Alle componenten zijn toegevoegd en hij kan nu in principe elk zonneboilersysteem doorrekenen. Als bewijs van zijn succes stuurde hij de hieronder staande grafiek mee. De rode lijn geeft de waarden gemeten aan een echte boiler weer. De blauwe lijn toont de waarden berekend door het model. Wauw, het past precies. De afwijkingen zijn echt minimaal. X = tijd in seconden, Y = temperatuur.

Sonos interface
This started with me buying a Sonos Zoneplayer 90 last weekend. While looking for a solution for our (future) home I stumbled upon a shop in the town where we live. The owner of the store, a real audiophile, presented me with the Sonos solution. I was almost immediately impressed and convinced that this would indeed be the solution I was looking for.
When I got home I installed the ZonePlayer Software on my PC and after hooking the device up with my network started to enjoy the wonders of Sonos. In about half an hour I was able to configure the NAS in my network as the source for music, download the App for my IPhone and IPad, discover the device and ….. play music.
So far so good. Installation was real easy. Now I have a Logitech Harmony 1100 and I thought this was going to be easy too. I totally miscalculated this. This was not easy at all. I didn’t want to fallback to the situation where I would need multiple remotes again to control my devices. The Sonos devices don’t have IR. They totally rely on WiFi which the Harmony can’t. I started a search on the internet and found many frustrated with the same issue. Why oh why did Sonos choose not to implement the simplest IR control into the devices? All I’m asking for is the simple functionality like play, stop, next, previous and volume up/down. Then I would have been totally satisfied.
Then I found that Philips had cracked the code. With there Pronto TSU9600 and TSU9800 one can control the Sonos devices but, my goodness, at what a price. You’ll have to spend over $1000,00 for those controls and I read they aren’t easy to program. So I thought, if Philips can crack to code so can I.
I started looking for articles about this on the Internet discovered an article that said Sonos is using UPnP. I started digging deeper and found a nice website that has an UPnP SDK with tools and look what my first discovery is. The tool ‘Device Spy’ immediately found the Sonos and it’s interface. So here’s a starting point. Stay tuned.
J River Media Center Remote control from Windows Phone 7
14 Sept 2011: MC Remote wins MarketRace competition at Macaw (www.macaw.nl).
A week ago (about the 7th September) MC Remote Pro was published by Macaw on the Marketplace. Since then more the 700 people downloaded the App. I was joining in a competition at Macaw’s called the MarketRace. MC Remote won the competition. I would like to thank all that have contributed to the success I had with MC Remote. Especially the people at J River (Jim Hillegas, Matt Ashland and others) for their support. Thanks all.
I’ve retreated MC Remote from the Marketplace. The PRO Version will be published soon for free by Macaw (www.macaw.nl).
Although I don’t even have a Windows Phone (yet) I’ve started developing a Remote Control for Media Center Versions 14 and up based on the Web Service in Media Center. Above and below you can see some Images caught from the Emulator.

The App has reached maturity. This is the functionality until now:

Settings for connecting to the server are stored in IsolatedStorage (meaning that with each start the settings can be retrieved from the memory of the phone)

Routines for reaching the server are working as expected

The App retrieves current playing info from the server and displays it. It also retrieves the image from the server (with some nice mirror reflection)

Buttons for Previous, Play/Pause, Stop and Next are working. Took the Layout from the Thunderstorm skin from MC)

Zones can be toggled and show information / search etc. accordingly

Added Page transition animations (see video)

Added Application bar (at the bottom) with menus

Setting Transparency for Images in Silverlight for Windows Phone 7
I studied this subject for almost a day and then, bang, it hit me. I knew how to do this 2 years ago. Tried it again and found the solution.
